The Morning After: Reaction to Aldon Smith
- Updated: April 29, 2011
The vibe out here is mainly surprise. Surprise because Gabbert was still available at the time of this pick, Robert Quinn was still available, and Aldon Smith is only 20. They say he has versatility, can play on the end of the line, or as a pass rushing OLB in the 9ers 3-4 scheme. He is a bigger, stronger version of Manny Lawson with an 8 foot wingspan, so even if he doesn’t get to the quarterback he is going to eliminate a passing lane.
I think people just don’t know what to think, because the pick was such a surprise. Positionally speaking, they made the right move. Taking a young kid might take a little longer to pan out, but getting a pass rusher makes the secondary better too (any QB with all kinds of time can pick apart any secondary). I think if Patrick Peterson was still there at #7 the 9ers would have taken him.
The unfavorable vibe is probably coming from people who don’t seem to get there is a lot of value in round 2-round 3 for QB’s (read: cheaper/less risky), and only know what Mel Kuiper says…
