Showtime Preview on the Giants is Out
- Updated: March 23, 2011
The much anticipated Showtime series on the Giants has its first preview out. I’ve watched it seven times now. By the end of it, it is impossible to not be smiling and giddy about the season to come. If successful for Showtime, the country will latch on to our Giants in a similar fashion it did to the Jets in HBO’s Hard Knocks. And it is certainly set up for just that. The preview presents a gripping reality show on the characters that brought us a World Series championship five short months ago, and Showtime is putting Brian Wilson, Tim Lincecum, Andres Torres, Pablo Sandoval, and Bruce Bochy up there with any other actor or reality star.
With the season having yet to begin, the preview sets its sights on the off-season training regiment, letting us peek in on the insanely unique work-out Andres Torres puts himself through, chucking cinder blocks over his head and sprinting up muddy hills wearing True Religion jeans in what looks like the jungles of Puerto Rico. It touches on what kind of Panda the Giants will get, with a shot of Sandoval lifting up his shirt showing his weight loss. It shows Sabean speculating how Miguel Tejada will fit in with the team, coupled with a behind-the-scenes shot of Miggy at his Giants photo shoot.
The preview also lets in the antics of the guys that we already knew. Brian Wilson rolling up to spring training driving an old police car with the PA system still in tact. Sergio Romo locking himself in the back of said police car. Cody Ross with an ear to ear grin. One scene has a dash cam on Lincecum’s car while he starts up his car, then another dash cam with a smile-less Zito in his convertible whipping down the road. We get a peek in on Freddy Sanchez at home with his gorgeous wife and his kids, tearing up the tile floor on their trike.
There’s also a lot of slow-mo shots of things like Burrell drinking water, Affeldt on the stationary bike, and the fans. The fans. Screaming, waiting for autographs, gazing. The increased media is played up, and the speculation of the Giants being a bigger attraction this year is already here. Then it closes, with Brian Wilson on the golf course, telling us to mark it down. Repeat.
