Baseball Writers Suck…

Baseball Writers, I Implore You…..
The moral grandstanding of America’s Baseball writers is nauseating. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemens were outstanding players BEFORE they allegedly (I say allegedly not because I think they may not have, but because we will never really know when they began) started juicing. In an age where most of baseball was, and has continued to be in one form or another, dirty, they simply wanted to stay at the top. Lowell Cohn (who somehow has a vote – he writes for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat – whose sports page includes details of the Kenwood Pillow Fights) wrote this:
“The BBWAA asks me to vote and I take my duty seriously. I try never to shirk a moral choice. And believe me, this is a moral choice… Cooperstown is not a statistics Hall of Fame. It is a Hall of Fame with certain standards of behavior.”
It’s not? Then why is it necessary for a player to have 400 HR, or have 3,000 hits, or 300 wins to be considered? Enough already with the writing about the moral alacrity you displayed with your ballot FOR A GAME – baseball writers aren’t Martin Luther King or Gandhi.
They already voted for Kirby Puckett, who displayed three of the more telling side effects of steroid use: strength and speed on a man built like a mall Santa, early onset glaucoma, and death by a stroke. Are you going to revoke his membership despite a “…preponderance of evidence…” like Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle mentioned existed against Bonds? No. I love baseball. LOVE IT. Let’s be honest though, it’s for entertainment and superhuman feats are entertaining. If we didn’t like it then we didn’t have to go. But we did, and loved it. Shouldn’t players who offered entertainment at the highest level be recognized?
If it’s because it was tainted by an unfair edge, then revoke Babe Ruth’s membership since he never faced an African American pitcher. UNFAIR – segregation was a DISGUSTING moral blemish of the country. Are you willing to suggest steroid usage is on the same level as racial inequality and segregation!? Of course not, so stop acting like it. Vote them in or not, but stop writing articles that are clearly designed to tell us how good and decent you are or that serve as self-justifications as to why you caved in to the rest of baseball’s writers even though you know this is about punishing the best players from an era riddled with steroid users.
Quite honestly, these writers aren’t voting for Bonds or Clemens because they were jerks and mean to these guys.
