Bay Area Bias

The Burns Factor

Newly acquired Brent Burns wasted no time signing an extension to his contract with the San Jose Sharks and that was one of my second stipulations on the trade being in favor of the Sharks or not. Signing an extension for a team when you haven’t played in one game yet speaks volumes about the San Jose Sharks organization as a whole. The atmosphere that Doug Wilson and company have created here in the Bay Area is attracting some of the greatest hockey players in the world. I’m sure the weather isn’t hurting the cause either (got to love the 300 days of sunshine in San Jose!).

Having played fantasy hockey for the past 6 years, Brent Burns has been on my radar as an elite defenseman for a while. I have had him on my team a few different times and he definitely helped me win my league’s cup last season(yes it is hand engraved). I also had the NHL package and would watch “my players” during their games. Brent Burns is definitely one of those players on the ice that stick out from everyone else. Sure, he is enormous (6’5 219lbs) and literally stands out on the ice but his puck play will stick out similar to Dan Boyle’s. Just look at this goal he scored last year against the LA Kings – he makes Brad Richardson and Jonathan Quick look like amateurs!

Some fun things that I love about Burns are the absolutely ridiculous set of photos he has taken over the years. He is a very active tweeter and also a very active trail-biker. He moved his family out to San Jose from Minnesota and I have a feeling he won’t be going back anytime soon, especially since he is the only Shark signed through the 2016-2017 season. Burnzie can also definitely grow a man-beard that will rival that of Shea Weber when the playoffs come around and I bet he is uber hungry to get into the postseason. With only 11 games under his belt from his years in Minnesota (the last time in 2008), his season is about to get a lot longer than 82 games.

Brent Burns just might be the missing piece that the Sharks need during crunch time and to possibly make it into the Stanley Cup Finals. And I can’t help to think that I am the only one that thinks that since the San Jose Sharks raised their ticket prices substantially this year….

Fun Fact: Martin Havlat is a playoff monster scoring 28 points in his last 26 playoff games – he will be up next week
