A Lot Can Happen in a Week
- Updated: June 10, 2011
So I’ve been drinking since 11am yesterday when I found out Geren was fired… and continued drinking when the A’s lost their 10th game in a row last night… I am still too hammered/hungover to write a revelant post, but I was able to highlight all the A’s transactions the past couple weeks…. expect a lot more post from me in the next 2 weeks on all this shit…
It’s June 10th, 99 games left in the regular season, and the A’s are already in panic mode. If you’ve been on a 10 day bender (like I have) and missed what the A’s have been doing, here’s a short summary of events since mid-May.
- May 17th: Dallas Braden undergoes shoulder surgery and will miss remainder of season.
- May 18-23: A’s go on a 6 game losing streak (2 loses to last place Minnesota, sweep by the Giants, and opening game loss to Angels).
- May 23: Designate Jerry Blevins for assignment and bring up Josh Outman from Triple-A to join starting rotation and Coco Crisp trade rumors arise.
- May 24-29: A’s win 5 of 6 games to come within 2 ½ games of first place Rangers.
- May 26: A’s owner Lew Wolff says manager Bob Geren is “fantastic” and likes “the way he deals with everyone.”
- May 27: A’s trade LHP David Purcey for minor league INF Scott Sizemore.
- May 30-June 8 and on…: A’s on current 9 game losing streak (swept by Yankees at home, Red Sox on the away, and last place Baltimore away.
- May 31: GM Billy Beane tells Kurt Suzuki he does not want him to attempt any home plate collision similar to the Buster Posey incident.
- June 5: Designate back-up INF Andy LaRoche for assignment.
- June 6: Recall INF Sizemore from Triple-A and demote 3rd baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff to Sacramento.
- June 7: Josh Willingham rumors arise.
- June 8: A’s call up 2nd baseman Jemile Weeks from Sacramento and Matsui trade rumors arise.
- June 9: A’s fire manager Bob Geren and hire 2007 NL Manager of the year Bob Melvin.
Additional transaction moves from May 18-June 8: Adam Rosales recalled from Sacramento, Mark Ellis placed on DL, Brett Anderson placed on DL with Tommy John rumors, Fautino De Los Santos optioned to Triple-A, and the Brian Fuentes/Geren communication controversy with former Athletic Huston Street commenting on his relationship with Geren, “my least favorite person I have ever encountered in sports from age 6 to 27.”
Great, obviously the A’s are headed in the right direction to make a run at the AL West championship…not! Late June is crunch time for the A’s. Crisp, Jackson, Kouzmanoff, Ellis, Dejesus, Willingham, and Matsui are all free agents at the end of this season. They have amounted for 60% of the A’s at-bats this season. If the A’s can’t pull their heads out and win a freaking game in June, expect all these players to be in a different uniform by August.
