Hey everyone, let’s go watch the Diamondbacks!
That’s been the mentality over the years when the D-Backs come to town. By the way, when John Miller says D-Backs, I swear he is saying “D-Bags.” Listen in, because as much as he loves to pronunciate words and names, D-Backs always ends in a soft “ck(g)” when he’s talking over Dave Flemming.
Anyways, the D-Backs have packed a pretty soft punch over the years – in general and especially at AT&T Park. The Snakes have double the losses than wins since 2006 at 3rd and King and seem incapable of adjusting the cold San Francisco summer from their Phoenix home. But 2011 is bringing a slightly new trend. The D-Backs are ahead of the Dodgers and Padres in the NL West and could pass the Giants with a (unanticipated) sweep.
Third baseman Ryan Roberts is on a streak for Arizona hitting .287 with 6 jacks and 16 ribbies while Steven Drew is among NL leaders in RBI’s with 23. Leadoff man Chris Young brings some pop with 8 home runs. In short, the D-Backs can score runs (they rank 4th in the NL), but can they pitch? Nope. With a team ERA of 4.44, their best bet for a quality start comes Tuesday night from Ian Kennedy (3-1 with a 3.80 ERA), but the rotation falls apart after that. Armando Galarraga loves to give up the long fly and Daniel Hudson, slated to throw Thursday against Cain, has D-Backs fans hopes high, but his 4.47 ERA is just as high.
A couple weeks ago the D-Backs won a series with the Phillies and took 2 of 3 from the Rockies last week, then went to San Diego and lost 2 of 3 to the cellar dwelling Padres, so this could be a team that plays up to its opponent. The team is just 5-9 on the road this year.
The Giants need to take advantage of the schedule at this point. The Rockies had a fast start with a soft schedule, so ground needs to continue to be made up. The D-Backs terrible pitching, road record, and uniforms should all translate to a sweep, in addition to them having to face Lincecum, Sanchez, and Cain.
